GSWW 40th Anniversary – Monday 13th Nov 2023

Celebrations began on Monday 6th November, 2023. Portland and district schools had been working on contributions to recognize the significance of the Walk for students, schools and the community. Their work was displayed in the Glenelg Library – Portland, with an opening event to launch the exhibition taking place on Thursday 9th November. This display is open to the public until Monday 11th December and we highly recommend a visit.

Saturday celebrations included a recreational walk at Cape Nelson along the Sea Cliff Nature Walk. This special walk was created in the late 1970s and proved inspiration for the creation of the 262km GSWW. A short ceremony was held on the cliff at the GSWW Historic Marker, the site of the original opening in 1983.

The Friends Group hosted a celebratory dinner on Saturday evening for 120 members, sponsors and guests with those present reminiscing about the original planning and construction of the Walk, also enjoying a memorabilia display, slide show and some presentations.
